Independence Day Reflections

It has been an amazing day of celebrating our freedom and country with family and friends. I love our great nation and honor our history, our leadership, and our military who protect it. As I was reflecting today, my mind drifted to our Declaration of Independence - specifically the part that reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Self-evident truths.

Oh, how I wish our nation still believed in self-evident truths; that our government would talk this way once again and fearlessly stand by their self-evidence. Just think about that sentence above. Our nation declared these truths to be so obvious and evident as to be undeniable:

All men are created beings.

All men are endowed by that Creator

All men are equal.

Yes, we have struggled in our history, living in practice as though some men are more equal than others. The three-fifths compromise, for example, is a national confession of our hypocrisy, so I know we have not been perfect by any imagination. But we had some guiding principles that have helped us find our way - calcified in our founding documents.

Self-evident truths come in very handy and could bring the wisdom of Solomon back into our national discourse on a wide array of topics.

I love our country and pray that God will one day again be seen as a self-evident reality and authority among us - not because our government said so, but because of a grass-roots revival among us all.
