As I mentioned in a previous post, the New Testament uses the phrase, “Make every effort” eight times and those uses comprise a brilliant list of eight different life principles that are worthy of our maximum effort. The rewards are powerful as we learn to live these eight priorities well.
Priority #1: Make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification. (Romans 14:19)
I was being interviewed recently and one of the questions was, “What do you believe is the most important skill for a leader?” Without question, it is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware of your own emotional state, the emotional state of the person you are dealing with, and being able to govern your own behavior and feelings to communicate effectively.
People with high “EQ” achieve more success, make more money, get more promotions, and always have jobs in tough job markets. They have better marriages, better families, and more fulfilling lives.
Emotionally intelligent people can communicate effectively and persuasively in almost any circumstance. This can sound like manipulation at first, but emotional intelligence is a completely different thing. The goal is not manipulation, but shared meaning and effective progress for both parties. The goal is always a positive experience and win-win solutions.
The goal is, in short, Romans 14:19 - peace and mutual edification.
So what is the advice?
Make every effort possible to do, say, and offer what leads to:
Peace - untroubled, tranquil, and content
Mutual edification - uplifting, enlightening, improving
One of the most powerful skills we can ever develop is the ability to communicate and behave in ways that lead to peace and positivity.
One thing I look for in anyone I hire or do business with is that whenever people interact with them for any reason (even a conflict) that they leave feeling better than they did when they arrived. That requires emotional intelligence, not manipulation. That requires a commitment to make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification.
Turns out God knows what He is talking about!
