If you want to move forward, intentionally and effectively toward achievement, you must possess three things: Vision, Intention and Means. This is the acronym VIM. Think vim and vigor, if you’re old enough to know that phrase.
Actually, You can Always get what You Want
At our church, Evergreen Christian Community, my dad has been leading us in a series called “Known” where he leads us, verse by verse week by week, through Matthew 6:5-15 which includes what many call the Lord’s Prayer. I’m a big fan of the series, and what has really stuck out to me the most is actually something Jesus says before he gets to the prayer:

You Can't Trust Your Heart
The human heart is held by many as their compass and they steer their lives in regards to its True North. The whole world can be shouting one thing, but they say if you follow your heart you will be just fine. The heart is responsible for many people following their passions and changing the world, and also for all sorts of mischief; ranging from funny, to petty, to debilitating. It leads men away from their wives, into pointless wars, against people who are their brothers and sisters, and all-too-often away from God.

How People Grow
Have you ever noticed that growing older doesn’t always mean growing more mature? We meet people who are mature beyond their years and then we meet others who have stalled out and remain fairly childish, despite the large number of laps they have completed around the sun.
The same is true of spiritual maturity.
Independence Day Reflections
Why Most Repentance Efforts Fail, part 2
In part 1, we concluded that our confession of complete brokenness and desperate and utter dependence upon God is the entry point of effective repentance. Letting your sin drive you to this place and to the reminder of your desperate need of God is the critical first step. Learning to live in this space will also empower us to walk more closely with God, leaning into His Presence and power so that we live for Him more effectively.
Getting out of a Rut: A Testimony for Stuck Christians
Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Darcy Fast spoke at a men’s dinner at Evergreen recently, relating his life’s story and emphasising the power of doing the same. It brought to mind a part of my story that I have been meaning to share, and figured this blog is the perfect medium. Keep in mind this will not be my whole life story; something similar to that exists under the “about” tab.

It’s Launch Day! What are these guys up to?
With our podcast, we want to help frustrated believers discover joy and hope through meaningful faith conversations that inspire them to pursue even more such conversations on their own. The two of us have been enjoying discussions like these for years and have recently come to recognize just how powerful and rare they actually are. We want as many people as possible to consistently experience fun, thoughtful, and honest faith conversations that keep them moving forward with energy and clarity in their walk with God. We call that discipleship.

Dad Priorities
Father’s Day is coming soon and I just want to brag on the incredible power of Dads for influence in the world. In fact, when you just study the tragic statistics of this world, you see the high cost of the loss of dads. For example, 90% of homeless and runaway populations and 80% of psych hospital patients are from fatherless homes. There are many more, but let’s not focus on the negative.
Reflections From a 9-day Cross-Country Harley Ride
I just returned from riding my Harley from Olympia, Washington to Phoenix, AZ and back. My son, Tim, flew here and I gave him my older bike - a 1998 Kawasaki Concours to his home in Phoenix. I rode my new-to-me 2012 Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic. My friend, Scott, joined us for two days and my friend Dallas rode the entire route with me. On the way to Phoenix, we did some coastal riding in Washington, Oregon and Northern California before heading east to Reno, down through Vegas and into Phoenix. Dallas and I took a different route back through the high desert of California and then up I 5 to home.
We Don't Start from a Balance of Zero
Toward the end of his ministry on Earth, Jesus washed his disciples feet in a legendary act of service. This one moment epitomizes Jesus’ time spent here, and his relationship with his disciples, and can be seen as very empowering. “The Son of God loves us enough to get on his knees and wash our feet? Even when he knows the terrible things we have done and will do?” And this sentiment is not wrong. But before you get too carried away there, Jesus says this to his disciples:
